Emily Pwerle’s
country is Atnwengerrp and her language is Anmatyerre and Alyawarr.
She is the blood sister of Minnie, Galya, and Molly
Pwerle.
Emily Pwerle, along with sisters Galya and Molly, began painting in
2004, in a workshop arranged by well known artist and relative
Barbara Weir. While Emily has not been painting as long her older
sister, Minnie Pwerle, who began painting in the eighties, she has
developed her own unique, contempory style and interpretation of
her dreaming. Like her sisters, Emily Pwerle’s main title is
Awelye-Atnwengerrp.
Awelye-Atnwengerrp is depicted by a series of lines painted in
different widths, patterns and colours. This pattern represents the
designs painted on the top half of the women's bodies during
ceremonies in their country of Atnwengerrp.
